Welcome to Miyagi Kan Karate
Miyagi Kan Goju-Ryu Karate Do was founded by Hanshi George Barounis (9th dan) in 1976. At Miyagi Kan we study, train and teach traditional Goju Ryu karate under the International Karate-Do Organisation syllabus as well as competitive sports karate in recognition with the World Karate Federation (WKF). Our dojo is named after Chojun Miyagi the founder of Goju-Ryu karate. Our Honbu dojo is located in Revesby, NSW however we have multiple dojos across NSW and New Zealand.
Karate is a Okinawan martial art which seeks to use body movements and techniques to protect one’s self from harm. Karate is taught in three main discplines: kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) all of which are fundamentally important in effective self-defence. Whilst the elementary reason for karate lies in its physical manoeuvres, its practice includes holistic benefits in developing the body, mind and spirit.
At Miyagi Kan our students and instructors have a wealth of experience at all levels of karate and welcome all walks of life into our dojo. Although the themes of traditional karate training are in combat and self-defence, we also aim to facilitate exercise, improve discipline, build self-confidence and encourage continuous improvement developed by persistent training
